I’m Fixing to Have a Special Day

I’m fixing to have a special day.

We all have our special day whether it be a birthday, or Mother’s Day if you are a mom, Father’s Day if you are a dad and so on. I recently found out there’s a grandparents day celebrated at schools during which grandma and grandpa come to school and visit with their grandchildren.

But what I’m talking about are those less celebrated but designated days in the year that you don’t hear much about.

For instance, this coming Sunday, September 16 is Collects Rocks Day. I couldn’t find any information pertaining to the origin of this special day, but most likely it’s written on the wall of a cave somewhere. But I do know that kids like to collect rocks and the ice cream flavor of the day is Rocky Road. I also know that ladies like to collect the shiny kinds of rocks they wear on their fingers or around their necks.

This coming September 22 is Autumnal Equinox Day, which signals the beginning of Fall and is the point where there are 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness at the equator. Of course we live a little north of the equator so we’ll see a little bit less or a little bit more of that daylight and darkness.

I’m not exactly sure how much, but I do know that after this date the daylight hours will dwindle and will continue to do so until we reach the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year and the beginning of winter.

Y’all are going to love this one. October 26 is Howl at the Moon Night. If you weren’t aware of this special day please don’t feel bad because I wasn’t either. I think it is a rather recent celebration and probably has something to do with Halloween. However, over the years I have known several people who like to howl at the moon for no apparent reason other than to just howl at the moon.

November 15 is I Love to Write Day. This is one of my favorites and if you haven’t heard of this one you’re way behind the times because it’s the tenth anniversary of this special day. And it can be celebrated in many ways. Teachers and schools can schedule author visits, have special writing contests for kids, or if you’re not a kid, just sit down and write a letter to someone special, or write a poem about something you care about.

December 14 is Monkey Day. Please don’t ask me how this one came to be. I have no earthly idea, but I can come up with a few guesses. We did send a monkey or two into space. We have also used poor monkeys to test all kinds of experiments on, so let’s hear it for the monkeys on December 14. Another theory I have about how this date came to be Monkey Day, is that everybody likes to monkey around once in a while, so mark your calendar!

December 18 is Bake Cookies Day. Now this is another one of my favorites because everyone can participate in it. You can bake them, you can buy them and you can give them. It doesn’t matter what our religion is or our political views, we all love cookies!

But back to that special day I was thinking about creating. I’ve given it considerable thought and decided it can definitely become a national day that everyone can celebrate and participate in. I just have to find an open date on the calendar. The special days I’ve mentioned above are only a few of the many that crowd the calendar, and I didn’t even mention the ones that celebrate major holidays.

I’ve come up with Friday, September 21, as the date to celebrate the newly acclaimed National Fried Day. It will be a day in which everyone can eat everything fried and not feel guilty about it. We can have fried festivals and benefits featuring fried chicken, fried fish, fried ham, fried donuts and fried everything! If we talk about it on all the electronic media outlets enough I feel confident we can get it on the national calendar next year.

In the meantime I’m fixing to do a trial run on it tonight. But you’ll be proud of me because I’m only going to eat vegetables. I’m fixing to fry up some green tomatoes, some pickles, some okra and some squash.
