I’m Fixing to Let the Good Times Roll

(Editor’s Note: Ted Dunagan is taking a break from writing his column. For the next few weeks, The Monticello News will feature some columns that ran previously.)

I’m fixing to let the good times roll.

The bills were all paid, my to-do list was up to date, my turnip patch was played out, and I could not find any reason not to go off and indulge myself in pleasure. After all, I had the money. My income tax refund check had recently arrived.

Uncle Sam had seen fit to give me back some of my own money, and I intended to spend it because it was in fact, money I had never expected to see again.

It had come in the mail, that check with all the little U.S. Treasury logos all over it, and the bank had been kind enough to cash it for me.

I put on my best shirt. It was a Hawaiian silk one with small puffing volcanoes all over it, and it looked real good with my starched khaki pants. I could feel that roll of cash in my pocket and it was burning the proverbial hole in it.

A good part of the day had been spent washing and waxing my car and it shined like new money. I could see my reflection in it as I loaded my equipment into it. It was only a small case, but its contents would certainly ensure that I let the good times roll.

It was time to hit the road. After I watered all my plants, I locked up everything up read tight, climbed into my car, started the engine, and pulled out of the driveway with my heart pounding with anticipation.

Everything looked real good in the rear view mirror, but not nearly as good as the picture in my mind’s eye of the wonderful experience that lay ahead. I quivered in expectation of what was to come.

Traffic was light and it didn’t take me long to reach my destination. I found a good parking space, extracted the small case from my car and entered the enormous structure.

There was a roaring and clattering sound inside of it that made my heart soar and butterflies flutter in my stomach.

And when I took my bowling ball out of the small case everyone there knew I was fixing to let the good times roll.
