Sweeping

For real, one of my favorite things to do is sweep the floor or really just sweep anything.

I guess this love of sweeping dates back to my childhood when I would sweep my grandmothers’ front porch before Sunday afternoon visitors arrived.

My grandmother even swept her front yard as many others did back then. Not a blade of grass grew under her feet. There weren’t any lawn mowers anyway and as a matter of fact, there were no lawns, just yards.

At the time, I didn’t question the logic of sweeping the yard, but as I look back she probably wanted some advance warning if a surprise snake crawled up and to cut down on the fear of tall grass catching fire and burning her house down.

There were no fire departments to call.

Sweeping is so therapeutic to me. Really all you are doing is moving the dirt and dust bunnies back outside where they belong, but sweeping does make you feel like you have accomplished something.

And there is more to sweeping than the stuff we do with a broom, there is also sweeping changes, sweeping vistas, sweeping her off her feet, sweep off your own front porch before you go on mine, street sweepers, mine sweepers and in a good way, sometimes we are swept away for a few minutes with our memories.
