Telephones
Did you ever notice the little white clapboard building in downtown Monticello next to CVS?
It is the telephone switch office for our county. Why is it important? If you are using a landline phone, every telephone call that you dial goes through the equipment in that building, even if you are calling China or maybe even as close as Eatonton or on your street.
Back on January 25, 1915, the first coast-to-coast phone call was made between New York City and San Francisco.
Alexander Graham Bell was in New York and his famous assistant, Mr. Watson was in San Francisco. Lots has changed since that day.
Today, we can just use our home phone or cellphone to call across the United States in a matter of seconds and it all has to do with that little white clapboard building in downtown Monticello.
So, Hello, Monticello and Hello, World!
