Deer Festival Parade Action

As of November 5th, I can mark off the “to do in my lifetime list,” riding on a float in a parade. Now I have watched plenty of parades go by, but it is whole ‘nother experience riding in one.

At this year’s Deer Festival parade, the Monticello American Legion had a float with eight riders including me. Although it was just a converted flat bed trailer, it was the Rose Parade for us.

At first there were only a few people standing by the parade route, but as we got closer to town, everyone on the float was amazed at how many people were watching. From all indications this was the biggest attendance for the Deer Festival and the parade.

So this was how it was to wave at many unknown faces in the crowd and acknowledge a few you knew. The next day I understood why politicians and beauty queens alternate their waving arm and also do a lot of pointing, it gives your waving arm a break in the action.

If I ride on the float again next year, I will have to start training with some waving exercises. Who knew waving could be such hard work?
