Cinco de Mayo

Happy Cinco de Mayo today!

To make sure why we celebrate Cinco de Mayo besides the day being the fifth of May, I turned to Wikipedia which is sure to give you the lowdown on anything you want to know (whether it is accurate is another matter).

Now, according to Wikipedia, Cinco de Mayo celebrates the defeat of the French in the Battle of Puebla and is really an American Civil War holiday “spontaneously created by Mexicans and Latinos living in California who supported the fragile cause of defending freedom and democracy during the first years of the War Between the States.”

Well, that thoroughly cleared up the question of why do we celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

Next, I turned to Jasper County citizen, Buzz Elizondo, who has descendants from Mexico, surely he could shed some margarita mix on this question. According to Buzz, born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, his family never celebrated it there, but he has been known to join in the fun in Georgia.

So far, I have found that Cinco de Mayo is to celebrate defeating the French and was started in 1862 to show that Californians supported the cause of freedom and democracy. This is one mixed up holiday, but it is sorta like St. Patricks Day. Who cares, just have some fun.
