Friendly Passersby
Jasper Countians must be the friendliest people in the world, they are always waving at each other.
They wave as they drive, they wave in their yards, they just like to wave.
There are several local waves that have been perfected, the out the car window wave, usually more enthusiastic than the inside the car wave where the driver momentarily lifts his hand from the steering wheel and waves palm toward oncoming car or person.
Also there is the “finger lift” wave, the driver only is required to lift his index finger from the steering wheel. I have observed this is the preferred wave for people in large trucks and the police.
If you see a really good friend, you can do the “double” acknowledgment, hand wave combined with a honk. The push is always who does what first.
When I am walking the Boo Dog, I wait for the wave before waving back, you can’t be too careful who you wave to these days, just kidding.
Now be aware Jasperites and take note that the wave and the finger lift are O.K. around here, but take care in the big city to the west of us.
Many times, drivers have passed me when I am doing my legal speed, 55 miles per hour, and used another kinda finger wave at me.
Oh, well…
