Clean Up Some Litter
I’m fixing to clean up some of the litter in my life.
The question is, there’s so much of it, where do I start? It could be the garage, the basement or maybe even a closet.
The closet sounded the easiest, so I decided to start there. There were all those shirts I didn’t put on once the whole summer. That’s usually a pretty good rule, if you don’t wear something for a year, you probably don’t need it and someone else probably does.
So I packed up all those shirts so I could somehow deliver them to someone who really needed them, and put them on a shelf in the garage.
Therein lay the next supply of litter—all the “stuff” littering up the shelves of my garage.
The first thing I saw was a fondue set I hadn’t used since 1961. Next to it were three picnic baskets, and I don’t think I’ve ever been on a picnic. Just beyond them were several crock pots. How many crock pots does one need?
I tripped over a juicer machine attempting to get to the 60 cup coffee maker I hadn’t used since my cousin Elroy’s wedding reception after he got back from Viet Nam.
I was so discouraged I decided I better just start with the basement.
I immediately knew that was a mistake because right off I began to find some scary stuff down there, beginning with a make-your-own-moonshine kit.
The other stuff I found told me I had definitely been watching too much late night TV. There were a set of seatbelts for a motorbike, some fireproof matches, a solar powered flashlight, an inflatable anchor, a silent alarm clock, a pedal powered wheelchair, and a battery powered battery charger.
So I gave up on all the litter in my life, and decided to just let it lie. Most of it was useless anyway.
But I did discover something much more important, that we also have litter in our lives which are not of the material kind.
They are the unkind thoughts in our minds and the unwholesome desires in our hearts.
If we could just discard these as easily as we can the useless things in our garages and basements, how simple life would be fixing to be.
