White Shoes

Yeeks, just a few days left for those white shoes, Fashionista Ladies of Jasper County.
Those girls raised in the South and newcomers who just want to get with the program know White Shoe Season starts with Easter and ends on Labor Day.
After Labor Day, you might get away with wearing white shoes if you are a bride or a golfer, but even brides tend to lean towards pearl white, ivory or champagne, instead of white shoes.
According to “A Southern Belle Primer” by Marilyn Schwartz, white shoes worn after Labor Day and before Easter is considered “tacky,” a strictly Southern word (we all know what it means). Various sources admit they do not have any idea where this Southern faux pas originated, but they do say it is “tacky” to go against the rule.

To get the local opinion on this important subject, I contacted some Jasperite women. Betty Jean Beck Jordan said “We, Georgia Tech alums, think it is o.k., if you pair it with Old Gold,” Dr. Alissa Shawn Cummings Holder said “tacky is as tacky does,” and Commissioner Mary Patrick said “I abstain.”

Well, there you have it, continue at your own risk, and if you should slip up and wear those white shoes after Labor Day, just tell everyone they are “winter white.”
