Students Excel at Nationals

Keiano Bullard and ScottiAnn Cummings recently represented Jasper County High School in the STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Events Competition at the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America’s (FCCLA) 2009 National Leadership meeting.
The national competition was held July 12-16 in Nashville, Tenn. The two girls advanced to the national level by first winning at the region and then the state levels.
Keiano Bullard, a 2009 graduate of JCHS, earned a gold medal, the highest award given at national competition, in the Focus on Children category of STAR Events. Her project focused on preventing bullying among young children.
As part of the project, Miss Bullard did a presentation for the fifth grade students at Washington Park Elementary to show them appropriate ways to deal with anger and frustration instead of bullying.

ScottiAnn Cummings, a rising junior at JCHS, earned a silver medal at the competition. She competed in the National Programs in Action category of STAR Events. Miss Cummings’ project focused on the chapter’s work to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.
The medals were presented at a recognition session honoring all participants at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel Convention Center on Thursday, July 16.
More than 5,000 members, advisers, alumni, and guests from across the nation attended the National Leadership Meeting this year. Misses Bullard and Cummings were accompanied by Mrs. April Clark, the FCCLA adviser at JCHS.
Not only did the students participate in the STAR Events Competition, but they also had the opportunity to attend leadership training sessions. The week ended with a formal FCCLA Gala where the students danced and celebrated their great successes in the competition.
Mrs. Clark, Keiano, and ScottiAnn would like to thank everyone at Jasper County High School and in the Monticello community who helped make this trip possible. Mrs. Clark and the students received valuable leadership training that they plan to put into practice throughout the upcoming school year. Mrs. Clark stated, “Getting to the national level took a lot of hard work and dedication. I am so proud of both Keiano and ScottiAnn. Having national winners from Jasper County is a wonderful feeling!”
