Psychic Readings

My family and I just spent a wonderful week vacationing in the Florida Keys and specifically in the town of Key West. I will have to admit it is a different world in Key West.
Key West reminds me a lot of New Orleans except Key West has better scenery and is a little less pretentious; make that a lot less pretentious.

One of the highlights of Key West is to watch the sunset from Mallory Square which is located on the Gulf of Mexico. As the sun sets hundreds of folks gather in the square. Also in the square are various street performers who play an instrument, juggle, ride unicycles, walk on glass, or turn flips for tips.

There are also a number of vendors selling jewelry, trinkets, food and drinks. There were also a couple of tables of psychics.

One of the psychics tried to give me her card so that I might partake of her services. I refused the card because I wasn’t interested. Further, I don’t believe she was a very good psychic. If she had been a good psychic she would have known that I wasn’t going to allow her to give me a psychic reading in advance and wouldn’t have wasted her time in handing me a card.

I don’t believe that psychics are demonic or satanic I just believe things like that are a hoax. Even so, I will admit that I do often think of the future. What type of world will the next generation inherit from my generation? Will my daughter have the same opportunities that I have had? Will history record that the world is a better place for our having our performance on the stage of time?

These are questions that I often contemplate. Quite frankly these questions cause me a certain amount of anxiety in my private reflective moments. In the closing verses of the Bible God asserts that he stands at the beginning and end of all things. So, I know that one day God’s perfect reign of justice and righteousness will come upon the earth. I know that one day “justice shall roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”

Yet, I also know this—Jesus has told us that the Kingdom of God is among us. In other words we are called here and now to be ambassadors of the Kingdom to make our world the world that God would have it to be. So it is that I am left with my questions about our world and about its future, not so much in the long term but in the short term. Further I am left wondering about what I am doing to make our world a better place.

I don’t wish to be trite but I often compare the progress of humanity to professional wrestling. Though I don’t watch it as much as I did as a kid I do enjoy watching professional wrestling. Don’t laugh—I know it is not legitimate athletic competition but it is entertaining.

Before the wrestlers enter the ring it has already been decided who will be the winner and who will get beat. The show is in seeing how it is going to happen.

So it is with the progress of humanity. It has already been decided that God will prevail in the great battle that is human history. We are left to see how it will come to fruition. The question that each of us must answer is simply on whose side will we stand as the battle is waged? A psychic cannot tell us the answer for it is an answer that only we can give.
