Historical Foundation Meeting Is Saturday

A frieze that was removed from the lobby of the old Monticello High School, 319 College Street, Monticello many years ago has been repaired and will be unveiled at the Jasper County Historical Foundation’s annual meeting this Saturday, May 3, at the school.

Registration for the meeting begins at 9 a.m., and the business portion will get under way at 10:30 a.m. New officers will be introduced, and Tyson Harty will also show a historical video presentation.

The frieze was found in storage where it had been damaged, or where it was placed after being damaged. Don Dougan of Marietta, a noted sculptor and teacher, will describe the renovation process of the frieze before unveiling the piece.

Also, Benny Hawthorne will display many of the historic photos he has collected and compiled through the years. They can be viewed before or after the meeting.

Walking tours of Eatonton Street, College Street and Forsyth Street will be offered. Homes will not be open, the architecture and historical significance of the exteriors will be reviewed. The Museum of Jasper County Heritage will be open Saturday afternoon.
