Monticello Election Is Tuesday

Advance voting for the Monticello city election continues through tomorrow, Nov. 2, and all registered voters who don’t take advantage of the opportunity to vote early can vote from 7 am. to 7 p.m. next Tuesday, Nov. 6.

All city voters can select a candidate for mayor. The candidates are Barbara Carmichael, Glenn Newsome and Jacqueline Bell-Smith. Mrs. Carmichael is a newcomer to Monticello politics. Both Mrs. Smith and Mr. Newsome have served as council persons previously.

Incumbent Mayor Susan Holmes, who has served for three terms, is not seeking re-election.

For mayor pro-tem, Russell Gross is seeking his first full term. He was elected in a special election last year. He is being challenged by Cynthia Miller.

For City Council, District 1, Post 1, Bryan Standifer is unopposed in his bid for his council seat. For District 1, Post 2, Alison Hildebrant and Martha S. Pompey are seeking the seat vacated by Jacqueline Bell-Smith.

For City Council District 2, Post 1, Bobby Jacobs is unopposed. That is the seat vacated recently by Scott Sauls who moved from Monticello.

For Council District 2, Post 2, political newcomers Katherine Alexander and Timothy R. Coffey are squaring off. That is the seat previously held by Mr. Newsome.

Voters are reminded that photo identification is required to vote. Acceptable forms of identification include a Georgia driver’s license, even if expired, an valid state or federal government issued photo ID, including a free Voter ID card issued by the county registrar or Georgia Department of Driver Services, a valid U.S. passport, valid employee photo ID from any branch of the U.S. Government, value U.S. military photo ID or valid tribal photo ID.
