Leadership Class Is Forming

A leadership class is slated to begin in Jasper County in January, and interested persons are now being enlisted for the six- to eight-week class.

The Development Authority of Jasper County was recently awarded a $3,000 grant for Leadership Development by the University of Georgia Fanning Leadership Institute.

The purpose of the grant is to improve local conditions for quality growth and economic development by improving leadership skills of potential and existing leaders.

Leadership Jasper is part of a comprehensive plan to involve citizens in the process of development decisions and help citizens gain a better understanding of state and local governance.

Rachel Torrance, retired County Extension Agent has volunteered to coordinate the Leadership program for 2007. The program will begin on Saturday, Jan.13 with a day-long retreat lead by Fanning Leadership instructors.

This will be a great time for class members to get to know each other as they learn about leadership styles and skills, said Ms. Torrance.

All of the classes will be interactive rather than lecture. After the retreat there will be a series of six to eight weekly sessions. Sessions will be on Tuesdays from 4 to 8:30 p.m. at various locations throughout the county. There will also be a class trip to Atlanta for Leadership Day with the Legislature on Feb. 12.

Applications must be completed by Wednesday, Jan. 3. Tuition is $75 per student, and there are a few scholarships available upon request.

For more details, pick up applications at the Chamber of Commerce/Visitors Center on the Square in Monticello, next to City Hall or contact Rachel Torrance at 706-468-8304 or 706-476-2860.

Leadership Alumni are asked to encourage potential and existing leaders to join the group.
