Dozen Right Is Enough for Win

Jan Gaston is emerging as the champion of her family of avid fans and long-time players in The News Football Contest. Though her hubby, Joel, was ahead of her with five entries on the grand prize honor roll, it’s the lady of the house who brought home the cash last week—for the second time this season.

Mrs. Gaston won the weekly prize as the only entrant to pick 12 winners from the 24 games listed. She collected the $25 from Covington Ford, sponsor of the week, where Jim Laster presented the check. Mrs. Gaston, who previously collected a weekly prize on Sept.11, is the first contest participant to win twice this season.

It was the fourth time this year that she qualified for the grand prize drawing, one behind her husband but two more than son Kevin. Each time a contest player picks 11 or more winners his or her name goes into the pot for the drawing for a premium four-ticket package to the 2006 Peach Bowl.

Four players besides the winner qualified for the drawing with 11 correct picks. The only games Mrs. Gaston missed were Atlanta’s dismal loss to New Orleans and Washington’s upset win over the Carolina Panthers. Those two outcomes surprised many contest players, as did wins by Georgia and South Carolina over arch-rivals Georgia Tech and Clemson, respectively, and various other outcomes.

Last Chance

The Gastons, and everybody else who enters this week, have one more chance to collect a $25 weekly prize and qualify for the honor roll. But only one more; the regular season contest closes after this week.

The games, including several conference title matches, are listed in sponsors’ ads on page 15.
McIntosh State Bank is the closing week’s sponsor. The deadline for entries to be delivered to The News office or faxed to 706-468-6576 is 5 p.m. tomorrow, Dec. 1.

Players are asked to check the honor roll listed on page 15 for accuracy. Anyone who believes there has been an error in his or her number of entries is asked to investigate now. Just call the newspaper at 706-468-6511.
