Mary Tumlin Wins Contest
The extended Tumlin family might be considered a team of their own when it comes to The News Football Contest, and it appears they’ve found some winning ways—at least for a couple weeks.
This week it was Mary Tumlin, a middle school teacher, who claimed the $25 weekly prize. Three weeks ago it was her father-in-law, Danny Tumlin of Turtle Cove, who picked up the prize. Not bad, but perhaps not surprising for a family that hasn’t won in the years that Mr. Tumlin and his wife, Sonja; Mary and her husband, Matt, and her daughter Jordana Pope have been trying.
Mary, who had made the grand prize honor roll only a couple times before last week, won by nailing tiebreaker score, 42 points, the number scored in Lincoln County’s shutout of Monticello.
She picked up the prize from Big Chic, sponsor of the week, by beating out three others who also picked the winners of 13 games but missed on their tiebreaker predictions. Scott Smith presented the prize check.
Others who picked 13 included mom-in-law Sonja, Joel Gaston and Ted Colvard. Another 17 contest players picked winners of 12 games and 26 more picked 11 to qualify for the grand prize drawing.
Anytime a player picks 11 or more his or her name goes into grand prize drawing pot—as many times as he or she qualifies.
A deluxe package with four tickets to the 2006 Peach Bowl will go to the winner whose name is drawn in December.
All four players who picked 13 winners missed on different games. Mary Tumlin didn’t expect Green Bay to lose to St. Louis; her mom-in-law, Sonja, went astray by picking Georgia to beat Tennessee (as did many other Bulldog faithful); Mr. Gaston erred by choosing LSU over Florida, and Mr. Colvard picked Virginia to defeat East Carolina.
This week another 14 games will test prognosticators’ mettle, with the winner to pick up a $25 prize from Monticello Pawn Shop, sponsor of the week. Games are listed in sponsors ads on page 13 of the print edition, along with the entry form, contest rules and grand prize honor roll.
The deadline to have entries delivered to The News office or faxed to 706-468-6576 is 5 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 13.
