Jan Gaston Wins Contest

The News Football Contest is something of a family tradition for the Gastons—Joel, Jan and sons Kevin and Kyle. And though they’ve been regulars on the grand prize honor roll, it’s been a while since any of them won…until this week when Jan walked off with the weekly $25 prize.

Her tiebreaker prediction earned her the win over four others who picked winners in 12 of 14 games. And one of the others was hubby, Joel. Mrs. Gaston guessed that 39 points would be scored in the Monticello-Putnam game that produced a total of 38 points with the Hurricanes 26-12 win.

Mr. Gaston predicted a 42-point total, thus losing to his better half by a measly 3 points. Rhett Roberts also was close with a 35-point prediction while Larry Gunter was further off the mark predicting 28 points.

Mrs. Gaston picked up her prize check from Roy Hulsey, owner of Pete’s BP, last week’s prize sponsor. Later this season it will be Mr. Gaston presenting a prize—but not to a family member—when his Jasper County Lumber Co. is sponsor.

Arguably Jasper’s leading Auburn fan, he is sponsor when his alma mater plays Georgia.

Though the Gastons both missed on two games they weren’t the same. Mrs. Gaston was one of the few to pick Boston College to beat Clemson but she missed on the Falcons win over Carolina and on Baltimore’s victory over Tampa Bay. Mr. Gaston picked the Falcons but missed on the Baltimore and Boston College wins. The other top finishers missed Boston College and one other game.

Besides the four players with correct 12 picks there were 14 who had 11 right to qualify for grand prize drawing. Each time a player picks 11 or more winners his or her name goes into pot for a chance at four Peach Bowl tickets and other Peach Bowl goodies.

This week’s winner will pick up a $25 prize from Dairy Queen. Games are listed in sponsor’s ads on page 15 along with the entry form, contest rules and grand prize honor roll.

Tomorrow, Sept. 15 is the deadline to have entries to The News office on West Washington Street or faxed to 706-468-6576.
