Doze Off

I’m fixing to doze off.

Dozing is a pretty wonderful thing. It fills in those spaces in your life that would otherwise be intolerable, and allows you to separate your mind from what’s actually going on without the people around you knowing what you’re up to.

You don’t actually close your eyes, except maybe halfway, then you kind of get a warm and fuzzy feeling and slip into a space that’s entirely yours in the universe, yet still be aware of and be able to react to what’s happening around you—with a slight delay that is.

There are times to doze and times not to doze. It’s never a good idea to doze while you’re driving an automobile. However, sometimes on a warm day when you’re on the road after a late or sleepless night the monotony of driving will make you doze off, and then you’ll be jolted back into reality by the sound two of your tires make just before they go into the ditch.

Dozing feels good. In fact, it feels so good that you finally get to the point where you really don’t care if you do run off the road. You just want to succumb to that floating feeling of being in a timeless place above reality.

That’s when it’s time to stop at Starving Marvin’s and get yourself one of those energy drinks.

Conversely, there are times when it’s entirely safe to doze, but it’s still not a good idea to let people know you’re doing it. You don’t want to hurt their feelings, seem rude or impolite, but you still want to be able to doze.

They say practice makes perfect. If that’s the case then I’m an expert dozer. I dozed off yesterday while my wife was talking about painting the interior of the house and replacing some of the carpet.

I’ve been dozing for a long time. I remember when I first discovered dozing. It was when I was a little boy sitting on a hard church pew on Sunday mornings. It worked then and it still works now.

Dozing also comes in mighty handy during boring business meetings. I’m proud to say I’ve dozed off in business meetings in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Memphis, Mobile, Birmingham, Atlanta, Little Rock, Miami, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Paris, France, and a few other places.

It doesn’t take much for me to doze off. In fact, I’m feeling a little light headed and believe I’m fixing to doze off right now.
