Curtis Jenkins Seeks Office

Curtis Jenkins, State Representative representing Jasper County from 1989 until January, 2005, has once again qualified to run for the District 125 (Jasper, Jones, Lamar & Monroe counties) seat.

In announcing his decision he said that “I will use the legislative experience that the people of Jasper County and the rest of this district allowed me to gain in the General Assembly to serve them, the citizens and taxpayers; they will always be my top priority and my service to them always a solemn responsibility.”

During his legislative service, Rep. Jenkins served as a member of the Appropriations Committee, Chairman of the Special Judiciary Committee, Vice Chairman of the Public Safety Committee, Vice Chairman of the Criminal Justice Subcommittee on Appropriations and as a member of the Intra-governmental Coordination Committee and the Interstate Cooperation Committee.

On the Appropriations Committee his experience and seniority led to his appointment to the Budget Subcommittee which makes final decisions regarding what items are included in the House’s state budget proposals.

A member of Dames Ferry Baptist Church, Mr. Jenkins and his wife, Carol, have an 18-year-old son, Curt, who is a senior at Mary Persons High School and a 13-year-old daughter, Leigh, an eighth-grader at Banks Stephens Middle School.

Mr. Jenkins earned his undergraduate degree in Industrial Management at Georgia Tech and his juris doctorate at Mercer University Law School. He practices law in Forsyth. His wife, Carol, is a substitute school teacher in the Monroe County school system.

A former volunteer firefighter and auxiliary deputy, Mr. Jenkins was a charter member of the Monroe County Volunteer Fire Department. He is a deacon and has taught Sunday School and formerly served as Moderator of the Kimbell Baptist Association.

He serves as a Boy Scout leader with Troop 51 in Forsyth and is a member of the Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce, the Jasper County Historical Foundation, the Gordon College Foundation Board, and the Jackson Lake Homeowners Association.

Rep. Jenkins sponsored many taxpayer-friendly bills, including measures creating income tax credits for parents whose children complete a drivers education course and for homeowners whose property is damaged by natural disasters (such as the flood damage at Jackson Lake in 1994), increasing homestead exemptions for home-owners, urging Congress to increase payments in lieu of taxes to local governments for federally owned land in Jasper and Jones counties, increasing the retirement income exclusion, and a measure expanding the use of Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax proceeds to include firefighting equipment.

He also authored legislation several years ago allowing Jasper County residents with homes on long-term leased lots at Jackson Lake to claim a homestead exemption.

As a Representative, Mr. Jenkins was recognized for his conservative representation and effective leadership, and for his strong support of the teachers, administrators and support staff that help educate our children; public safety personnel; Second Amendment rights; small businessmen and women; economic growth; and a clean environment.

Among the many measures Rep. Jenkins sponsored in recent years were bills addressing the “identity theft” crisis, giving the public easier access to felony conviction records, encouraging the use of fuel-efficient hybrid vehicles, and creating more protections for victims in domestic violence cases.

He also previously sponsored legislative measures aimed at protecting Jackson Lake and the Ocmulgee River from metro Atlanta pollution.

Jenkins said that his pledge is to use his legislative experience for the good of this community, and that he believes that while we face challenges, working together, we can meet and overcome those challenges.
