…”We’ve been astounded by what location in Georgia and location in Atlanta has done for our company”…—Pete Correll, Chairman & CEO, Georgia Pacific.
Mr. Correll’s statement not only applies to Georgia but to Monticello as well because Georgia Pacific is one of our largest industries and employers. Imagine the pride we feel in having them feel fortunate to have located here—here in a county that’s rich in fertile soil, agriculture, beauty and history.
We enjoy a quality of life here that affords us a lower cost of living, which enables us to do more with our hard earned dollars. We enjoy a wide range of recreational activities—boating, camping, fishing, golf, hiking, horseback riding, swimming, tennis—all in a county filled with natural beauty that is on display all four seasons of the year.
With a growing population approaching 14,000, Monticello and Jasper County have the prized position of being able to open their arms to new residents and new businesses, yet we recognize the need to manage it all and keep a well balanced mix of old and new. We never want to lose our small town charm.
“There ain’t nothing from the outside that can lick any of us”… Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With The Wind.
Monticello’s unique in its makeup. We’re home to superstars, we’re a solid faith-based community, we’re diverse, and tourists love visiting Monticello. Some get here quite by accident and others make plans to come and linger a while.
They read about the four scenic byways converging on the Square, making us the only town to enjoy such an honor, and they want to travel those roads and take in the beauty that’s not marred by billboards or gaudy advertising.
You should know that Jasper County is an active tourism partner with the Georgia Department of Economic Development’s Tourism Division, because Tourism is Economic Development.
When the Chamber of Commerce markets Monticello, it markets Georgia, it markets tourism and ultimately it markets economic development.
When the Chamber of Commerce and the Better Hometown Program brag about the increased visits from tourists, it’s because they both understand how important tourism is for our city and how visitors help to increase our local revenue.
Next time you go shopping, consider shopping locally and show your appreciation to our businesses for establishing roots here.
The Chamber of Commerce asks that we all welcome our tourists, give them space to park on the Square and invite them to shop and dine with us. Remember tourism is economic development.
