Mandatory 10-Digit Dialing Begins

Starting next Monday, April 3, all telephone users must dial 10-digits when calling others, whether the number being called is in the 706 area code or another area.

Metropolitan Atlanta telephone users have been dialing 10-digits for years, and now phone number growth has reached the point that it is necessary in Monticello and Jasper County was well as other areas in the 706 area code.

Next month, new numbers will be issued with the area code 762. No current numbers in use in the 706 area code will change, but future numbers will have 762. Therefore one residence or one business could have numbers with two different area codes.

Telephone users are reminded to check pre-programmed numbers in speed dialing and other automatic dialers. If they have not yet been changed to include the area code, that action should be taken immediately.
