Shady Dale Improves Well System
The Shady Dale City Council is planning upgrades for the city’s well-water system and fire department.
Mayor Don Heaton and council members Steven Champion, Karen Bryan, Jenette Samoray, Louise Westbrook, and Deann Greenway voted unanimously on both issues.
Well repairs were approved in the amount of $7,100 for installation and pipes. Water superintendent Gary Champion was also authorized to purchase necessary water equipment up to $1,500.
With regard to future work needed on the system, council approved redeeming two water bonds, valued at $20,000, for well upgrades.

Also, Mayor Heaton reported that Elaine Cain of the Georgia Rural Water Council visited last week to review the well’s fluoride set up. The representative said that the city’s fluoride supply was not being properly administered and she recommended halting fluoride administration into the well water, according to the mayor.
The mayor also said that Ms. Cain alleged that the state had sent some scaling equipment, valued at $5,000, to the city and that it could not be located. Since neither the current mayor or water superintendent were in office at that time, Mr. Heaton was not aware of any such shipment and asked Ms. Cain to check her records.
Since the equipment was purchased with grant funds the city could be fined for its misplacement, if indeed it was sent and received. Mayor Heaton said he hopes it’s an oversight error on the council’s part.
The Shady Dale fire house is getting garage door openers installed. It has become an issue for personnel on a fire call to prolong their rescue by stopping to close the department doors. New doors will be installed on the front with remote controls placed in each fire truck.
In other action, council passed a homeland security resolution as presented by EMS director Ed Westbrook.
Council approved four nominations to the zoning board—James Westbrook, Otis Gude, Fletcher Bryan and Sandra Weaver. The board, once approved, will have to appoint a secretary to replace Lynn McLaurin, who resigned from that duty.
Also discussed were updates to the land use map and submitting them to the Northeast Georgia Regional Development Council.
Other items of discussion included putting surplus items up for bid, updating street lights, invoice approvals, replacement of city signage, and additions to the city park.
