See You on the Square/Notes from Your Better Hometown Program
Whew. October and November have been full of activities on the Square. I am truly hoping that you enjoyed the events in Monticello.
We closed the month of October with the final day of Market on the Square on the 29th and it was a grand finale. Our entertainment was the Honey Creek Boys, one of the finest bluegrass bands around and if that wasn’t enough, Piedmont Academy decided to hold their Fall Festival on the Square at the same time.
There were soo..oo..oo many happy, smiling faces of all ages there and Mother Nature gave us a day we could not have ordered (note: the Market was never closed due to inclement weather during its entire run—May 7 to October 29) and the crowds came and played and ate and shopped and most of all stayed until late afternoon.
Thank you to all our vendors; entertainers; our young workers; Market Director, David Dyer; Entertainment Director, Les Steele; The Monticello News, and most of all thanks to you Monticello for supporting the Market. We have plans to return in the Spring with a bigger and better Market On The Square.
Haunticello was a great success and owes a debt of gratitude to the incredible merchants who supported us with the purchase of candy for the trick-or-treaters. We thank you so much and are so appreciative of your continued support.
There were some unique and beautiful costumes, young and old—we hope to see you all again next year.

The Deer Festival; the Deer Festival Parade; the Deer Dash; and the Deer Stand Derby were all phenomenal this year. Attendance was up for the Festival, the parade was a true reflection of our community, (about that Army helicopter flyover, well…it worked), the entertainment was exciting as were the Dash and the Derby. Thanks to all who participated in all of the events and we’ll see you all again next year as well.
Coming up on December 17, Civil War Artist, John Paul Strain will sign autographs and talk about his work at the Olive Tree Gallery. This promises to be an exciting day (and a perfect time for Square merchants to have a day of Christmas shopping in downtown Monticello) because a large number of tourists are expected since this event is getting national exposure and Mr. Strain is honoring Monticello with his presence.
The coming year will be full of more exciting events on the Square—the Catfish ‘n Blues ‘n Rock Street Dance, the Gospel Fest and the Children’s Festival to name a few.
As always, I’ll See You On The Square.
