New County Manager Takes Office

Jasper County commissioners voted unanimously to hire Greg Williams as County Manager upon recommendation from interim county manager Leonard Myers during a called meeting last Thursday.

The meeting opened with a brief convenation of the commissioners in executive session prior to employing the former Rockdale county manager.

The Oxford, Alabama native currently resides in Covington with his wife, Dianne. They are the parents of a son, Brad, and grandparents to two. Mr. Williams said that it’s his intention to relocate to Jasper County and remain here a long time.

“I want to make Jasper County a better place to live. I hope to have some impact on the quality of life in Jasper County,” said the newly hired county manager of his job.

Mr. Williams earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting with a minor in economics from Jacksonville State University in Al. and has accumulated several hours toward a Master of Business Administration.

The former U.S. Air Force Sergeant has been gainfully employed since 1973 most recently serving six years as the county manager of Rockdale County where he oversaw some 700 employees and a $69 million budget.

With a strong background in finance, he has also served as director of finance with John Harland Company in Atlanta and Bostrom Seating, Inc. in Piedmont, Al. His resume also includes various certifications and training seminars locally and regionally.

Having a limited knowledge of Jasper County politics through previous regional collaborative efforts, Mr. Williams plans to began work without any preconceived notions.

“I want to start with a clean slate and develop relationships as I go.”

The county manager likens the function of county government to that of a corporation. However, instead of being accountable to a board of directors, governments must be accountable to the citizens, he explained.

“Our job will be to discern what is best for the county as a whole versus individual pockets of influence.”

In discerning what will be key issues for Jasper County, Mr. Williams noted that the SPLOST continuation is critical and as with any government, finances will be a top priority.

In addition to discerning that which is best for the county, the new county manager hopes to build a collaborative effort between the governments of the city and county, and the school board.
