Justin Owens Vies For Judge Post
Justin Owens of Mansfield is seeking election to the office of Probate Judge.
The special election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 8. It is necessary because Probate Judge Kathy Tyler died suddenly September 1, leaving the seat vacant. Linda Mock, long-time clerk, is currently serving as Probate Judge. She, too, is seeking election to the post.
Mr. Owens, a Newton County native, moved to Jasper County more than five years ago, and is currently employed with the Covington Police Department where he has worked for the past seven years.
Mr. Owens, who turns 31 in October, holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Troy State University, and has attended hundreds of hours of training in areas such as management and leadership, criminal procedures, case law, investigations, and has completed a 120 hour course on supervision.

While employed with the police department, he has received the Rookie of the Year award, a departmental commendation, and the department’s most prestigious award, the Police Star. He has worked several different assignments with the department including assignment to the DEA federal Drug Task Force in Atlanta, and is currently assigned as a sergeant in the patrol division.
Mr. Owens cites his extensive courtroom experience as one reason for seeking the office of Probate Judge saying, “I have assisted in the prosecution of cases at all levels, from local municipal court all the way to the U.S. Federal Court, and I have always been intrigued by the intricacies of our Judicial System.”
In addition to his professional experience, he is an active member of New Rocky Creek Baptist Church, where he has served as a youth Sunday school teacher and choir member.
“One of the most important things I will bring into the office of Probate Judge is Christian values. My faith in God is very important to me, and I seek His guidance in all things,” Mr. Owens said.
He is also a member of the Covington Lions Club and serves on the Jasper County Planning and Zoning Commission.
“Since moving to Jasper County I have come to genuinely appreciate the quality of life that we enjoy here, and want to help maintain that quality of life for future generations. That is why I accepted appointment to the Planning and Zoning board, and is one of the many reasons I wish to serve as Probate Judge.”
Mr. Owens cites his police experience as very valuable to the office of Probate Judge saying, “In my police career I have experienced things that most people will never experience, and have dealt with hundreds of delicate situations. Many of these situations have been domestic in nature and highly emotional, much like those that come through the Probate Court.
“I believe the conflict resolution and decision making skills that I have acquired will greatly enhance my ability to effectively settle the issues that are brought before the court.”
“I will also work to see that the Probate Court is utilized to its fullest authority, by hearing all criminal cases that fall under its jurisdiction, thereby alleviating the state court of the burden of an increased case load of misdemeanor cases.”
Mr. Owens is married to the former Amy Morgan of Jasper County, and has two children, Rylee 4, and Mason 6 months. Rylee is a student at Jasper County Primary School in the Pre-K program.
Mr. Owens said he enjoys hunting, golf, and reading in his spare time.
“I have chosen Jasper County as my home and the place to raise my family. I now want to serve the people of the county that I have grown to love. I have dedicated my life to public service, and I encourage you to let me demonstrate this dedication to the people of Jasper County by bringing a fresh perspective and traditional values into the office of Probate Judge.
