COC Annual Dinner Planned

The Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce annual dinner is planned for Thursday, Jan. 27, and everyone is invited to join the 2005 COC Board of Directors at Frank’s Restaurant at 11818 Hwy. 212 West in the northern end of Jasper County.

The evening will begin with a social hour at 6:30 p.m. Guests may enjoy drinks and a display of historic Jasper County photographs presented by Benny Hawthorne. Mr. Hawthorne is a United Parcel Service driver that delivers to Jasper County and has taken a sincere interest in Jasper County even though he is not a local resident.

He has thousands of photos of this area and is forever willing to share a copy with anyone who asks. His display is always interesting and informative—and may even display a photograph of you or one of your family members.

Dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m. with a choice of Prime Rib or Salmon Fillet. All dinners will come complete with a salad, roll, baked potato, broccoli medley and peach cobbler for dessert.

The program for the dinner will consist of remarks from the out-going 2004 President, Steve Currie, the incoming 2005 President, Tricia Armistead and the guest speaker, Janis Cannon, the Deputy Director of Tourism for the Department of Economic Development.

All current COC members have been sent an invitation by mail, but the dinner is in no way meant to be exclusive. All businesses, employees and spouses are invited. If you are interested in seeing what the Chamber has accomplished in 2004 and what we have in store for the next year, or just want to spend a night out with your neighbors, please plan to join us, said Maggie Potter, COC executive director.

Ms. Cannon will share her expertise on tourism in Georgia and explain how Jasper County can cash in on the second most profitable industry in the state. Ms. Cannon comes highly recommended to us from our regional director of tourism, Fay Tripp, as well as Paul and Susan Holmes. She should prove to be entertaining and highly informative for local businesses.

The program will conclude with the announcement of the Citizen of the Year and a very special presentation that will be a surprise to all attending. The Citizen of the Year is an annual presentation of the Chamber of Commerce to recognize an individual who resides in Jasper County for the positive contribution he/she has made throughout the past year to the community.

Nominations are taken each year towards the end of November from the public. A special committee is formed to debate and discuss the nominees and decide on a recipient. The decision is then kept a secret until the dinner when it is revealed to all in attendance.

Finally, there will be several door prizes given away just before the dinner adjourns that have, in the past, ranged from weekend stays at the Ritz Carlton on Lake Oconee to complete car detailing packages given by Sundown Collision and rounds of golf at various locations.

The local community in order to promote their business and reinforce the “Shop at Home” initiative sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, Better Hometown Program and the Downtown Development Authority donates the prizes.

Dinner guests are asked to please RSVP by Friday, January 21 with their choice of dinner so the COC can give Frank’s Restaurant an accurate head count. Those that also pay by Friday, January 21 can purchase dinner for $30 per person. Tickets can still be purchased after the 21st and at the door for $35 per person.

Call Mrs. Potter at the COC office at 706.468.8994 for more information or to make reservation.
