Dodi Bassett Wins Contest

Dodi Bassett was surprised to learn she had won last week’s News Football Contest—she had only entered four or five times since she started playing this year and didn’t remember for sure what teams she had picked.

But she guessed the winners of 11 games and made a good tiebreaker guess to qualify for the $25 prize offered by Dairy Queen, sponsor of the week. Peggy Hammerling (at left in photo) and Ginny Shelton presented the check.

Her prediction that 39 points would be scored in the tiebreaker game, Thomas Jefferson’s 40-14 win over Piedmont, was closer than the 33-point total prediction by Jimmy Thigpen, the only other contestant with 11 correct picks.

Their names have been added to the grand prize honor roll, qualifying them for a drawing for a four-ticket package to the 2004 Peach Bowl. That’s all that were added, because with only 13 games that counted last week it was hard to get 11 right. (The Fort Valley-Miles game was an erroneous listing, leaving only 13.)

Ms. Bassett, like most players, missed on Maryland’s stunning 20-17 upset of Florida State, and on Green Bay’s 18-14 win over Washington. Mr. Thigpen was one of the few to predict a Maryland win, but missed on two pro games, Houston’s 20-6 win over Jacksonville and the N.Y. Giants’ 34-23 victory over Minnesota.

Outcomes of other games last week included: Morgan County 28, Putnam County 7; Georgia 31, Florida 24; Clemson 26; N.C. State 20; Auburn 35, Mississippi 14; Tennessee 43, South Carolina 29; Mississippi State 22, Kentucky 7; Atlanta, 42, Denver 28, and San Diego 42, Oakland 14.

This week Correct Cleaners will award a $25 prize to the contest player who picks the most winners of games listed with sponsors’ ads on page 14 of the print edition, subject to the tie-breaker. And names of all who get 11 or more right will be added to the honor roll.

Also on page 14 of the print edition are the entry form, contest rules and honor roll. Entries must be delivered to The News office or faxed to 706-468-6576 no later than 5 p.m. tomorrow, Nov. 5.
