25 Killed in Holiday Accidents
Twenty-five people—eight more than predicted —were killed in traffic accidents on Georgia roads during the holiday weekend, state troopers said.
By early evening Sunday the Georgia State Patrol reported 24 traffic fatalities during the period that began at 6 p.m. Wednesday and ended at midnight Sunday. A final count released Monday brought the total to 25.
In Jasper County, there was one fatality (see related story) in six accidents with three people seriously injured in those accidents.
Two women were injured when their cars crashed together on Hwy. 83 south near the Monroe County line around lunchtime Saturday. Two of the accidents were motorists hitting deer, and another also had no injuries.
The highest number of Christmas deaths occurred in 1971 when 36 people were killed in Georgia.
