Fifth Grader Gets 12 Right To Win Contest
Piedmont Academy fifth grader Alexis Fields admits to getting some help with The News football contest.
“I filled out the first seven, and he filled out the last seven,’ she said, indicating her nine-year-old brother, Taylor.
The teamwork, along with a good tiebreaker guess, won Alexis the $25 prize offered by Monticello Drugs-Radio Shack, sponsor of the week. Pharmacist David Leach presented the check to Alexis, since her name was on the entry. But she promised to share with Taylor.

Looking on sheepishly as she received the prize was older brother Clint who entered on his own but, sorry Clint, picked fewer than 11 winners.
Between them Alexis and Taylor picked winners of 12 games. They predicted that 35 points would be scored in the tiebreaker game in which Greater Atlanta Christian beat Morgan County, 34-0.
Also picking 12 winners were Kyle Gaston and Candice Thomas, but they weren’t as close on the tiebreaker score.
Only two other players picked as many as 11 winners to qualify for the grand prize honor roll.
Since he picked from the last seven games listed, young Taylor became one of the few entrants to pick winners of all the pro games listed. At the top of the list Alexis missed on the Morgan County loss and on Virginia’s 35-21 victory over Virginia Tech.
Outcomes of other games included: Georgia 34, Georgia Tech 17; Florida State 38, Florida 34; Tennessee 20, Kentucky 7; Miami 28, Pittsburgh 14; Notre Dame 57, Stanford 7; Alabama 21, Hawaii 16; Houston 17, Atlanta 13; Philadelphia 25, Carolina 16; New England 38, Indianapolis 34; Baltimore 44, San Francisco 6, and New Orleans 24, Washington 20.
Last Chance To Qualify
This week is the last chance for contest players to win a $25 prize or qualify for the honor roll.
McIntosh State Bank is sponsor of the week. The games are listed in sponsors’ ads on page 16 along with the entry form, contest rules and the list of those who have qualified for the grand prize drawing so far. Each time a player picks 11 or more winners his or her name goes on the honor roll.
The player whose name is drawn will win four lower level tickets near midfield for the Peach Bowl on Jan. 2 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Clemson is expected to meet Florida in the classic SEC-ACC shootout.
Besides game tickets for the 4:30 p.m. contest, the winner’s package includes four tickets for the “FanFest” celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the World Congress Center on game day and four souvenir Peach Bowl-2003 pins.
The deadline for entries for the year’s final contest is 5 p.m. tomorrow, Dec. 5. Entries may be delivered to The News office or faxed to 706-468-6576.
