Football Contest Winner Has Perfect Score
What a difference a week makes. One week after News Football Contest players were hard pressed to pick more than half the game winners they racked up some of the best scores in recent memory—including the first perfect score recorded in years.
Jo Ann Cann picked the winners of all 14 games listed last week, the first time that’s happened since 1997. She edged out three players who picked 13 winners to qualify for the $25 weekly prize given by Jasper County Lumber Co., sponsor of the week.
Since Ms. Cann was out of town this week the prize was collected by her son, Chris Nix, also an avid contest player who regularly delivers his and his mother’s entries to The News office on Fridays. Joel Gaston, owner of the lumber company and arguably Jasper’s most avid Auburn fan, cheerfully presented the prize despite his alma mater’s 27-6 loss to Georgia.

In all, 60 players’ names were added to the grand prize honor roll, probably a record. Each time a player picks 11 or more winners his or her name goes into the pot for an end-of-season drawing for a premium four-ticket package to the Peach Bowl. Last week 21 players picked winners of 12 games and another 35 picked 11 winners.
Here are the outcomes of other games listed last week: Monticello 26, Hancock Central 15; Morgan County 36, Putnam County 10; Georgia Tech 41, North Carolina 24; LSU 27, Alabama 3; Florida 24, South Carolina 22; TCU 43, Cincinnati 10; West Virginia 52, Pittsburgh 31; Valdosta State 30, West Georgia 17; New Orleans 23, Atlanta 20; Houston 12, Buffalo 10; Green Bay 20, Tampa Bay 13; Carolina 20, Washington 17, and Philadelphia 28, N.Y. Giants 10.
This week McMichael’s Pizza will award the $25 prize to the entrant with the most correct picks, subject to the tiebreaker, from games listed in sponsors’ ads on page 16. And, again, the name of anyone with 11 or more right will be added to the honor roll, no matter how many times it’s already there.
The honor roll list also is on page 16 along with the contest entry form and rules. Entries must be delivered to The News office or faxed to 706-468-6576 no later than 5 p.m. tomorrow, Nov. 21.
