Carol Bird Announces Candidacy
Carol S. Bird, a Monroe County registered nurse and health care consultant, has announced that she will try once again to unseat veteran state Rep. Curtis Jenkins in the House district that includes most of Jasper County.
Ms. Bird made the announcement locally at an impromptu appearance on the Monticello Square last Tuesday, Veterans Day, appearing with Fred Meyer, Republican Party chairman for Jasper County. In her remarks she paid tribute to veterans “who have served and protected America’s freedom.”
The 93rd House District she seeks to represent includes all but the northeastern corner of Jasper County, all of Monroe and portions of Bibb, Butts, Jones and Lamar Counties. It is essentially the same district represented by Mr. Jenkins, a Democrat, since the 1980s.

In her announcement Ms. Bird noted that in 2002 she carried Monroe County, where both she and Mr. Jenkins reside, and won 45 percent of the vote throughout the district.
“With the support of Gov. Sonny Perdue and Sen. Saxby Chambliss, House District 93 will become Republican in 2004,” she said.
Noting that she is the daughter of a rural Georgia farmer and a probate judge, she said, “I am a lifelong resident of Georgia and have made Monroe County my home for 18 years.” She said she would work on issues like education, rural economic development and health care.
“I have spent almost three decades as a health care professional ensuring the highest quality of life and health for the people that I have served throughout this district and I understand that listening is the key to helping,” she said.
“In 2001 I incorporated a successful health care consulting business that assists health care providers in providing quality health care with fiscal responsibility. I want to take my experience in health care to the state House to focus on the problems with the health care delivery system.”
The candidates will run in party primaries next July and, if nominated, the general election next November.
