Kenneth Andrews Wins Contest Outright
For a long time Kenneth Andrews’ name has been at the top of the grand prize honor roll in The Monticello News football contest. That’s because the list is alphabetical, not because he’s ever won—until last week.
Though the Monticello resident has picked enough winners to make the honor roll many times, the $25 weekly prize he collected from Monticello Farm & Garden Center this week was his first. Iris Moore made the presentation.

In the years he has played he has picked enough winners on occasion to earn a prize, but was beaten by the tiebreaker. This time he didn’t need the tiebreaker, he was the only entrant to pick winners of 12 of the 14 games listed.
Thus, there’s now a “2” by his name on the honor roll meaning he is in the pot twice for the grand prize drawing.
Nine other players’ names were added as they picked winners in 11 games, the number it takes to qualify for a drawing for a premium four-ticket package to this year’s Peach Bowl.
Picking was tough last week, partly because the two “bay” teams disappointed many contest players: Tampa Bay was upset by San Francisco, 24-7 and Green Bay fell to St. Louis, 34-24. Mr. Andrews predicted the St. Louis win, but missed on Tampa Bay and on Florida’s 33-28 victory over Arkansas.
Many players also missed on Piedmont’s 21-8 loss to Flint River as well as any number of these other outcomes: Monticello 34, Oglethorpe County 6; Morgan County 44, Hancock Central 0; Georgia 27, Vanderbilt 8; Arizona State 33, North Carolina 31; Mississippi 43, Alabama 28; Ohio State 19, Iowa 10; New Orleans 45, Atlanta 17; Philadelphia 14, N.Y. Giants 10, and Minnesota 28, Denver 10.
The selection of games for this week’s contest appears in sponsors ads on page 14, along with the entry form, contest rules and honor roll. Whoever picks the most winners, subject to the tiebreaker, will collect a $25 prize from Master Import Repair, sponsor of the week.
The deadline for entries to be delivered to The News office, or faxed to 706-468-6576 is 5 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 24.
