New Face Expected on Monticello Council

Monticello voters will have to name one new member to the City Council in the Nov. 4 municipal election and a second incumbent said Tuesday that he is undecided about seeking reelection.

Adam McGinnis said this week he will move out of the city later this year and thus be ineligible to seek reelection to the District Two, Post 1 seat he has held for some 15 months. Scott Sauls, the other District Two councilman, said he was uncertain about seeking a second four-year term.

The deadline for qualifying is 4 p.m. this Friday, Sept 12.

Mayor Susan Holmes, Mayor pro tem Otis Clark, and District One council members Jacqueline Smith and Bryan Standifer all have said they will run again.

Mr. McGinnis said he is “talking to people” about running not only for the seat he is vacating but also other council positions. “Competition is good,” he said, and he believes council members should be more involved in details of city operations. “As it is now all the decisions are made before they get to the council.”

He said that while he will not be a city resident he will continue to be interested in city government and will contribute in any way he can. He said he might also get involved in county government, possibly running in the future for a County Commission or Board of Education seat.

Mr. McGinnis was elected last year in a special election to replace Stone Workman, a two-term council member who had to resign when he was appointed state director of rural development for the United States Department of Agriculture.
