Used Computers Are Available

Computers for Learning is a program that allows federal agencies to transfer computer equipment they have “outgrown” to schools and nonprofit organizations.

This program has been around since 1996 helping many schools acquire the equipment needed to teach the technological and computer skills our children will need in jobs and to compete in the 21st century, according to a news release from the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests.

A school is eligible to receive computer donations if it is a public, private, parochial or home school serving pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade students. An educational non-profit agency is eligible if it is classified as tax-exempt under section 501(c) of the United States tax code and serves these students.

They must also be located within the United States or its territories to be eligible. State licensed, registered home schools, serving one or more students are also eligible.

The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests now have 47 Pentium II, 300-400 MHz computers to donate under the Computers for Learning program. Each system is complete with keyboard, monitor, mouse and CD-ROM. Schools may register for this program online at http://www.computers.
fed.gov/public/home.asp or write a letter requesting consideration and expressing need.

Letters should be addressed to Forest Supervisor, Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests, Computers for Learning Program, 1755 Cleveland Hwy., Gainesville, GA 30501.

Criteria used to place these computers will include student-to-computer ratio, the number of computers already connected to the internet, the percentage of students receiving subsidized lunch assistance, whether the school is in an empowerment zone or enterprise community, if the computers donated would be compatible with the school’s technology plan, if the school is on a “needs improvement” list, if the school is located within the area served by the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests, the school system’s tax base and the purpose intended for the equipment to be used.

Schools will be notified if and when their need can be met through this effort.
