Tiebreaker Determines Contest Winner, Again

James Huff has been a regular player in The News football contest for years, but this year he hadn’t entered until last week. The delay, it seems, paid off–for the first time in all those years he won the weekly prize.

He was one of only two entrants to pick winners of 13 games and collected the $25 check on the strength of his tiebreaker prediction. Jim Laster of Covington Ford-Mercury, sponsor of the week, made the presentation.

The only game Mr. Huff missed was Indianapolis’ 23-17 upset of the Miami Dolphins, an outcome that surprised many. Bonnie Phillips was one of many players whose hopes were dashed by Florida’s 16-13 win over Georgia, the only game she missed.
The Monticello Hurricanes also disappointed many players as they fell to Greene County 39-27 to produce a whopping tiebreaker total of 66 points. Mr. Huff predicted 41 points, a bit closer to the total than Ms. Phillips’ guess of 33. Four players picked 12 winners, mostly missing on either Georgia or Monticello and one of the other games listed.
Another 14 players picked 11 winners to qualify for a shot at tickets for four with other goodies to the 2004 Peach Bowl. Each time a player picks as many as 11 winners his or her name goes on the grand prize honor roll. The winner of the Peach Bowl package will be drawn from that list at the end of the season.
Results of other games last week include: Piedmont 41, Twiggs 0; Morgan County 35, Wilkinson County 14; N.C. State 51, Virginia 37; Arkansas 71, Kentucky 63; Virginia Tech 31, Miami 7; Ohio State 21, Penn State 20; Morehouse 48, Clark 33; Philadelphia 23, Atlanta 16; N.Y. Giants 31, N.Y. Jets, 28; Dallas 21, Washington 14, and San Francisco 30, St. Louis 10.
Next week Expert Collision Repair will give the $25 prize to the player who picks the most winners, subject to the tiebreaker, from games listed in sponsors’ ads on page 16. And anyone with 11 or more correct picks will earn a shot at the grand prize. The entry form, rules and honor roll also are on page 16.
The deadline for entries to be delivered to The News office or faxed to 706-468-6576 is 5 p.m. tomorrow Nov. 7. Entries must be complete and legible.
