Veteran Player Gets 13 Right
It’s been a long wait for Roy Davis. He’s been playing The News Football Contest faithfully since its inception and won once in the early years, back in the 1970s. Then came a long dry spell—until last week.
The longtime Monticello fan who used to be part of the “chain gang,” marking down and distance on the sidelines at Hurricane games, was the only entrant last week to pick winners of 13 games. He thus took home the $25 prize awarded by McMichael’s Pizza sponsor of the week. Tracy McMichael made the presentation.

It was the third time this season that Mr. Davis made the honor roll, where his name has appeared regularly over the years. Also added were seven players who picked 12 winners and another 20 who had 11 right. One of the names on the honor roll will be randomly selected as the winner of a premium four-ticket package to this year’s Peach Bowl.
The only game Mr. Davis missed was Duke’s 30-22 upset of North Carolina. That result and a couple other Carolina games fooled many entrants—Maryland’s 26-24 win over N.C. State and the Carolina Panther’s 24-20 loss to Dallas.
Other outcomes, some of which surprised a lot of players, included: Morgan County 28, Model 10; Georgia 30, Kentucky 10; Virginia 29, Georgia Tech 17; Auburn 28, Alabama 23; Clemson 63, South Carolina 17; LSU 17, Mississippi 14; Michigan 35, Ohio State 21; Tennessee 38, Atlanta 31; Indianapolis 17, Buffalo, 14; Baltimore 44, Seattle 41, and New England 23, Houston 20.
This week the contest player who picks the most winners, subject to the tiebreaker, of games listed with sponsors ads on page 16 will pick up a $25 prize from Monticello Drugs-Radio Shack, sponsor of the week. The entry form, contest rules and honor roll also are listed on page 16.
The deadline for entries to be delivered to The News office, or faxed to 706-468-6576, is 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28.
