Voters Need To Register

Prospective voters have until two weeks from next Monday to register or make sure their registration information is up to date if they are to participate in the first of a spate of elections coming up this year.

The Feb. 2 registration deadline applies to the Presidential Preference Primary scheduled March 2.

The Democratic ballot will include the names of nine candidates seeking their party’s nomination of a candidate to face President George W. Bush in the Nov. 4 general election. Though there will be a Republican ballot, President Bush will be the only choice. Voters can choose either party’s ballot even if they plan to vote in the other party’s general primary in July.

The March 2 election also will include a referendum on the state flag. Voters can choose between the flag adopted in 2001 and the one that replaced it last year. The design prominently featuring the Confederate battle flag will not be an option.

On July 20, voters will choose party nominees for virtually all elective county offices, members of the General Assembly and Congress and many judicial posts. Runoffs, where necessary, will be held on Aug. 10.

Registration information is available at the registrar’s office on the ground floor of the historic courthouse, phone 706-468-4908.
