Cold Weather Causes Few Problems

Cold temperatures and ice did little to upset routines around Jasper County early this week, however the cold, ice and fog made for a really dreary day Monday.

The only ice accumulations were on trees and power lines, and it was not enough in most places to cause problems. Roads stayed clear, although there may have been a few icy patches at bridges.

The warm temperatures that immediately preceded Monday’s cold left the ground warm enough that there was no accumulation of frozen stuff.

Jasper County public schools experienced few problems, said Supt. Jay Brinson. The problems they did have were electrical issues, he said, causing some technology problems. He said they had to shut down some computers, and that computer-controled appliances experienced some difficulties.

The heat did not come on properly at Washington Park, making the school a bit chilly, he admitted. However, he said it was not uncommon for that to happen on Mondays.

All the buses rolled, said Mr. Brinson, and got all the children to school on time Monday, and home safely Monday afternoon. And, his fears were not realized Tuesday, and buses were again able to roll, pretty much on schedule.

There were reports of scattered power outages, but they were very limited. Craig Frank with the Central Georgia Electric Membership Corporation said his company had a couple of outages in Jasper County, probably affecting less two dozen homes. Power was returned in less than two hours, he said.

City of Monticello officials said a tree limb falling on a line caused an outage to a few houses, but power was quickly restored.
There were no reports of any serious weather-related traffic accidents.
