Regular Player Wins For First Time

Persistence paid off for Tammy Harvey last weekend when she made a good tiebreaker prediction to win The Monticello News football contest and a $25 check presented by Roy Hulsey, owner of Pete’s BP, the week’s prize sponsor.

She has played regularly in the past, but last week was the first time she brought home the top prize. With her when she picked up the payoff was daughter, Kaitlyn.

Ms. Harvey was one of 13 who picked the winners of 13 games, missing a perfect score by one. Her tiebreaker prediction of 55 total points in the Monticello-Morgan County was the closest to the 66 points scored in Morgan’s 52-14 victory. All the others with 13 correct picks guessed lower totals.

Another 18 players picked 12 winners and 29 were right on 11 games, making 60 entrants eligible—many for more than one time—for the grand prize drawing. One lucky player will win a premium package of four tickets to the 2005 Peach Bowl, with tailgate party admission and other goodies thrown in. Every time a contest player scores 11 or more correct picks his or her name is added to the honor roll.

The only game Ms. Harvey missed was Michigan’s 27-25 victory over Penn State. Many others missed on that one, and lots also were foiled by Tuckegee’s 27-14 thumping of Fort Valley State.

Others were fooled by LSU’s 21-17 win over Florida, or by various combinations of these other outcomes: Flint River 38, Piedmont 0; Greene County 44, Putnam County 9; Georgia 34, Vanderbilt 17; Georgia Tech 35, Duke 10; Auburn 37, Arkansas 17; Atlanta 34, New Orleans 31; Cincinnati 31, Tennessee 23; Carolina 21, Detroit 20; Tampa Bay 27, Miami 13, and Dallas, 16, N.Y. Giants 13.

Next week another $25 check will go to the player with the most correct picks, subject to the tiebreaker, courtesy of Monticello Sign Shop, sponsor of the week. Games are listed in sponsors ads on page 15, along with the entry form, contest rules and the honor roll. Anyone can win, but entries must be delivered to The News office, 237 West Washington St., Monticello, or faxed to 706-468-6576 no later than 5 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 21.
