Two Time Winner Strikes Again

Tom and Marene Brazil have been playing The Monticello News football contest since they moved to northern Jasper County in the late 90s. But their results are different: She wins. He doesn’t—at least not yet.

Mrs. Brazil this week picked up her third weekly prize since she first won in 1998. As the only player with 13 correct picks last week she qualified for the $25 prize awarded by Dairy Queen, sponsor of the week. Peggy Hammerling and Ginny Shelton made the presentation.

Close on the winner’s heels was Nancy Cullum with 12 correct picks.

Another 13 players picked 11 winners to be eligible for the grand prize drawing. (And, no, Mr. Brazil wasn’t one of them.) At the end of the season, four premium tickets to the 2005 Peach Bowl and other goodies will be awarded in a drawing.

Mrs. Brazil missed a perfect score by picking Tennessee “because they were playing at home.” Despite the home field advantage the Volunteers were upset by South Carolina, 16-15, in one of the week’s biggest surprises.

Many other players had faith in the home team and missed on Thomas Jefferson’s 40-18 win over Piedmont. Lots of Bulldog loyalists also were disappointed as Georgia fell to Florida, 14-10, but Georgia Tech faithful were vindicated as the Jackets beat Clemson, 10-9. The pro games tripped up lots of entrants—including Mr. Brazil. And Ms. Cullum’s only miss besides Tennessee was the St. Louis Rams’ 24-21 win over Jacksonville.

Outcomes of other games listed last week include: Morgan County 49, Putnam County 6; Wake Forest 44, Duke 6; N.C. State 21, Southern Mississippi 17; Ohio State 45, Minnesota, 31; Georgia Southern 55, South Dakota State 42; Miami 21, New Orleans 6; N.Y. Giants 36, Washington 0; Chicago 19, Detroit 13, and Denver 49, Philadelphia 21.
This week’s games include some unpredictable matchups in high school playoffs along with an interesting array of college and pro games.

Whoever picks the most winners, subject to the tiebreaker, will collect a $25 prize from Monticello Drugs, sponsor of the week.
The games are listed in sponsors ads on page 13, along with the official entry form, contest rules and honor roll.

Hurry—the deadline is 5 p.m. tomorrow, Nov. 4. Entries must be delivered to The News office on West Washington Street, just off the Square, or faxed to 706-468-6576.
