Contest Is Tough this Week

The only thing predictable in last week’s Monticello News football contest was that 14 games would be played—predicting the winners in even a dozen of them turned out to be virtually an impossible task.

Tracey Johnston, who plays the game “just for the fun of it,” became the week’s top prognosticator by picking 11 winners, one more than anybody else. Thus she qualified for the weekly $25 prize, presented by David Leach at Monticello Drugs/Radio Shack, sponsor of the week.

For the second time this season Ms. Johnston’s name was added to the grand prize honor roll, giving her two chances in the drawing for four midfield tickets to the 2005 Peach Bowl, along with admission to the pre-game festivities in Atlanta and souvenirs. Contest players names are added any time they pick 11 or more winners.

Usually that’s many more than one player, but, then, there aren’t usually as many surprises as there were last week. In the pro games alone Ms. Johnston was almost alone when she picked winners of all five games listed.

In the colleges she, like many, missed on Miami’s pounding of Virginia Tech, 27-7; North Carolina’s 16-14 upset of Boston College, and Albany State’s 41-28 win over Fort Valley State.

But she picked winners in all the other games, including these outcomes: Edmund Burke 35, Piedmont 27; Morgan County 17, Greater Atlanta Christian 10; Georgia Tech 30, Wake Forest 17; South Carolina 14, Arkansas 10; Notre Dame 41, Tennessee 21; Penn State 35, Wisconsin 14; Atlanta 17, Miami 10; Carolina 34, Tampa Bay 14; Cincinnati 21, Baltimore 9; Chicago 20, New Orleans 17, and Minnesota 27, Detroit 14.

With title races tight in both the Southeastern and Atlantic Coast conferences and some playoffs under way, picking may not be easy in this week’s contest. But regardless, whoever picks the most winners, subject to the tiebreaker, will pick up a $25 prize from Jasper County Lumber Company, sponsor of the week.

And anybody who manages 11 or more correct picks will have his or her name added to the Grand Prize Honor Roll and a shot at a memorable visit for four to an exciting Peach Bowl game.

Games are listed in sponsors ads on page 15, along with the official entry form, contest rules and the honor roll listing. The deadline to have entries delivered to Tte News office, or faxed to 706-468-6576, is 5 p.m. tomorrow, Nov. 11.
