First Time Winner Gets 12 Right
Since he began playing the football contest four years ago, Lawson Fulton’s only wish was to have his name listed on the honor roll. He achieved that goal and more last week by besting the rest, including his competitive brother who has previously made it to honor roll status.
Mr. Fulton picked up his prize Tuesday from this week’s sponsor Sun Down Collision, courtesy of Doug Currie. The affable truck driver was more excited that his name would appear in the paper— his picture and the prize are just icing on the cake.
Six contest players picked winners of 11 games, earning a place on the grand prize honor roll and a chance to go, with three others, to the Peach Bowl in Atlanta on Dec. 30. Each time a contestant picks 11 or more winners his or her name goes into the pot for the drawing for the premium four-ticket package. If Mr. Fulton wins that drawing he plans to “have a blast” in Atlanta.
He only missed two games in last week’s contest. Amazingly one of those picks was against his favorite college team, Georgia Tech. Few predicted the Yellow Jacket’s upset of the nation’s No. 3 Miami Hurricanes by a 14-10 score. He also missed on Clemson’s 13-9 win over archrival South Carolina.

Unlike most contest players he apparently had little faith in the Atlanta Falcons, and picked Tampa Bay, upset winners by a 30-27 count. Though he miscued on his preferred college team he had no problem picking his NFL team of choice, Indianapolis Colts.
Like about half the contest players Mr. Fulton predicted a Greene County to win over Cook. The 27-6 by Greene, the only GHSA District 7-AA playoff survivor, puts them in the semi-final round at the Georgia Dome at 9 a.m. tomorrow, too early to be included in this week’s contest.
Results of other games listed last week include: Georgia 45, Kentucky 13; Auburn 38, Alabama 18; Virginia Tech 52, Virginia 14; Arkansas 44, Mississippi State 10; Boston College 31, Maryland 16; Ohio State 25, Michigan 21; Chicago 13, Carolina 3; Indianapolis 45, Cincinnati 27; N.Y. Giants 27, Philadelphia 17, and Jacksonville 31, Tennessee 28.
Contest players have only this week and one more to pick up a $25 weekly prize and possibly add their names to the honor roll. Whoever picks winners of most games listed in sponsors ads on page 13, subject to the tiebreaker, will win the prize from Covington Ford, sponsor of the week.
The entry form, contest rules and honor roll also are on page 13 of the print edition. Entries may be dropped in the slot in the door of The News office on West Washington Street just off the Square or faxed to 706-468-6576 until 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25.
