Last 2005 Contest Winner Named

Ervin Fulton was the winner of the final 2005 Monticello News football contest, and he collected a $25 prize from Garrett Wild (right) at McIntosh State Bank in Monticello for his efforts.

Five players, including Mr. Fulton, would have had perfect scores had it not been for Florida State’s stunning 27-22 upset of Virginia Tech. Those who picked winners of the other 13 games, besides Mr. Fulton, were Donna Bailey, Tink Dover, George Rae and Dan Roberts. Mr. Fuller’s tiebreaker prediction of 40 points was closest to the total of 48 scored in Georgia’s 34-14 win over LSU, earning him the prize.

Mr. Fulton said he has been playing for six or seven years and this is the first time he has won. He made the honor roll four times previously this year.

He said he won because Tink Dover talked him into picking Cincinnati and he went higher on the tie-breaker than Mr. Dover did. Mr. Dover indeed also had 13 right, but was further away on the tie-breaker.

Another 12 players picked winners of 12 games and 25 contestants had 11 correct picks. Thus 42 names have been added to the honor roll for the grand prize drawing scheduled next week. (See related story.)

Scores of other games last week include: Texas 70, Colorado 3; Navy 42, Army 23; Southern Cal. 66, UCLA 19; West Virginia 20, South Florida 13; Furman 24, Richmond 20; Carolina 24, Atlanta 6; Chicago 19, Green Bay 7; Tampa Bay 10, New Orleans 3; Miami 24, Buffalo 23; Cincinnati 38, Pittsburgh 31; N.Y. Giants 17, Dallas 10, and Baltimore 16, Houston 15.
