First Time Winner Wins Last Contest

Ervin Fulton was the winner of the final 2005 Monticello News football contest, and he collected a $25 prize from Garrett Wild (right) at McIntosh State Bank in Monticello for his efforts.

Five players, including Mr. Fulton, would have had perfect scores had it not been for Florida State’s stunning 27-22 upset of Virginia Tech.

Those who picked winners of the other 13 games, besides Mr. Fulton, were Donna Bailey, Tink Dover, George Rae and Dan Roberts. Mr. Fuller’s tiebreaker prediction of 40 points was closest to the total of 48 scored in Georgia’s 34-14 win over LSU, earning him the prize.

Mr. Fulton said he has been playing for six or seven years and this is the first time he has won. He made the honor roll four times previously this year.

He said he won because Tink Dover talked him into picking Cincinnati and he went higher on the tie-breaker than Mr. Dover did. Mr. Dover indeed also had 13 right, but was further away on the tie-breaker.

Another 12 players picked winners of 12 games and 25 contestants had 11 correct picks. Thus 42 names have been added to the honor roll for the grand prize drawing scheduled next week. (See related story.)

Grand Prize
It’s time…the time we’ve all been waiting for. After 14 weeks of The Monticello News football contest, and 14 weekly winners, nearly 150 individuals have qualified for the grand prize, and one lucky winner will be chosen to receive four tickets and other goodies to the Peach Bowl in Atlanta on Friday, Dec. 30.

The names of each person who qualified, and the number of times they qualified, are listed in the box on page 6 of the print edition. All football contest players are encouraged to check the list. This is the list that will be used for the grand prize drawing.

Anyone with concerns about the honor roll list is asked to call Kathy Mudd, editor, at The News, 706-468-6511, by 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, with those concerns. Otherwise the list published here will stand.

The drawing will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, so anyone who wants to be present may do so. The winner will be announced in next week’s Monticello News.

The Peach Bowl will feature Miami vs. LSU, and a report from the coaches will be included in next week’s Monticello News.
