911 Board To Be Restructured
Discussions among Jasper County Joint 911 Authority members about reducing the 10-member board continued during last Friday’s quarterly meeting of that authority.
For at least a year authority members have considered reducing the number of those who serve on the board—an action that requires being set in motion by the county commission.
After unanimously agreeing to eliminate two of the 10 positions county manager Greg Williams, who serves on the board, said he would address the issue with the commission and place the item on the April 17 work session agenda. According to state guidelines, the only position stipulated to serve on the authority is that of the sheriff.
In other board related matters, Ronnie Payne was elected chairman and Sandra Carter as vice-chairman.

In new business discussions, Emergency Management Agency director Ed Westbrook briefed the authority on changes in Georgia code mainly cell phone billing procedures and federal changes linked to voice over IP internet phone service.
The director also said that landscape improvements were in the works on the 911 and Sheriff Department grounds with plans for additional parking spaces.
With regard to 911 employees, Mr. Westbrook suggested that the organization mirror the county’s holiday schedule as set at the beginning of each year. Authority members voted 6-0 unanimously to implement such.
Additionally, Mr. Westbrook approached thr authority about implementing shift changes on the holidays so that the same employees don’t routinely get the less desired holiday shifts. Chairman Payne suggested that particular issue be left for management to decide and the remaining authority members agreed.
During a technical review, the director informed the board that some 911 equipment updates were needed and that training on the new mobile command post was in progress.
During board member comments, Mr. Williams inquired about the 911 authority’s annual audit.
Members in attendance included Chairman Payne, Mr. Williams, Jim Striplin, Charles Roper, Hugh King, David Morrison as well as Mr. Westbrook and secretary Melissa McElheney.
