First Contest Winner Gets 12 Right

In Tracy Reece’s perfect world, he would win The News Football Contest grand prize drawing and go with three guests to the Peach Bowl in December where his favorite team, Miami, would be one of the contenders.

Well, he really would like to see Miami go to a bigger bowl, but if they return to the Peach, he wants to be there to see them.

The Turtle Cove resident has a way to go, but he took a first step by not only getting on the grand prize honor roll but also winning the $25 prize for the first week of the 2006 contest. The check was presented by Walker Jordan at the Bank of Monticello, last week’s prize sponsor.

Mr. Reece, a veteran contest player who has had one win over the past five years, was one of four to pick winners of 12 games. His tiebreaker prediction of 52 points was closest to the total of 54 tallied in the Monticello-Social Circle Game. Ryan Norwood, Ronnie Payne and Jontae’ Sands also picked 12 winners, but guessed a lower tiebreaker score.

Four others picked 11 winners to qualify for the honor roll, starting the season with eight names on that elite list. Each time a player gets 11 or more correct his or her name goes into the pot for the drawing for four Peach Bowl tickets and other goodies in a special prize package.

This week’s sponsor, Pete’s BP, will award a $25 prize to the player with the most correct picks, subject to the tiebreaker. The games are listed in sponsors’ ads on page 15, along with the official entry form, contest rules and the honor roll.

But hurry—the deadline for entries to be delivered to The News office or faxed to 706-468-6576 is 5 p.m. tomorrow, Sept. 8.
