A Gift from God
Recently I caught a chartered bus in Greensboro and rode with about 60 other University of Georgia fans over to Columbia, S.C. for the Georgia-South Carolina football game. It was a great evening for those of us of the Dawg Nation as we whipped South Carolina and kept them from scoring.
Traveling with us on the bus was my good friend Cla (pronounced Clay) Allgood. His real name is Conrad Lagunas Allgood, so I think it is pretty easy to see why he goes by the name Cla.
He is the owner of a very successful landscape design business in the North Atlanta suburbs. Cla is one of the real characters that I have known. He stands about 6’8” and tips the scales at a little over 300 pounds.
He is always quick with a witty comment and is just one of those folks that are always, as we say in the South, “stirring up something.”
It was no different with Cla on the bus trip to and from Columbia. There was mile after mile of comments from Cla on countless subjects. He was constantly “stirring up something.”
After the football game, as we left the stadium area we sat for quite a while in traffic gridlock. Cla provided his own unique commentary on the situation the whole time. I laughed until tears rolled down my face. He made what could have been a very frustrating experience a fairly tolerable one.
I think Cla and the rest of his friends, and especially his wife would be amused to hear Cla described as a gift from God but I believe that is what he is.
I think God gave us the ability to laugh and even laugh at ourselves so that we will not become frustrated and bored with the mundane and annoying things of life. People that can make us laugh are truly a gift from God.
We all need a good laugh at times, even if it is at our own expense. I know there are times that I can become a little pompous and full of myself and need to be brought down a peg. That’s why God sends people that can make us laugh, even if we are laughing at ourselves.
I thank God for the people that can make me laugh, even if they are named Conrad Lagunus.
