Contest Week Gets Tougher
The going got a bit tougher for prognosticators in The News Football Contest last week. In a turnaround from the previous week that saw a perfect score and 70 grand prize qualifiers, only three contestants picked the winners of 12 games, while seven others added their names to the grand prize honor roll.
James W. Smith nailed the tiebreaker score to win over Joel Gaston and Marene Brazil. By predicting 35 points in the game won by Gatewood over Piedmont 21-14, Mr. Smith qualified for the $25 prize from Larry’s Four Way Stop, sponsor of the week.
Les Johnson presented the check to the lucky winner. Mr. Smith not only hasn’t won before, it was only the second time he’s ever played. He made the honor roll last week, the first time he played.
In last week’s games almost no one predicted N.C. State’s upset of Boston College, and the Arkansas win over Alabama surprised many contestants. Very few picked winners of all five pro games, and some players were fooled by one or more of the high school games, altogether making predicting tough to on all concerned.
The names of 10 players who picked 11 or more winners have been added to the grand prize honor roll. The contestant’s name drawn from that elite group can take three guests to the 2006 Peach Bowl, enjoy pre-game festivities and sit it premium seats.
The player who picks the most winners, subject to the tiebreaker, in this week’s contest will pick up a $25 prize from Correct Cleaners and, along with all who pick 11 or more winners, be listed on the grand prize honor roll.
Games are listed in sponsors ads on page 15, along with the entry form, contest rules and honor roll. Entries must be delivered to The News office or faxed to 706-468-6576 no later than 5 p.m. tomorrow, Sept. 29.
