Kim Roberts Wins Football Contest
To begin with, there was that unpleasantness up in Athens when Georgia’s Bulldogs were defanged.
Later the Falcons were grounded in the Georgia Dome. In between, Wake Forest’s Deacons squeaked by the N.C. State Wolfpack, and Auburn’s War Eagles rolled over those Gators from Florida.
Those were just some of the surprise outcomes that bedeviled News Football Contest players last week, making it difficult to pick the winners in even 11 of the 14 games listed.
Kim Roberts was one of only five contestants to pick 11 winners, and she nailed the 43-point tiebreaker to win the $25 weekly prize from the Monticello Pawn Shop, sponsor of the week. Tim Born, manager, presented the prize.
Not only was it the first win for Mrs. Roberts, it was the first time she made the grand prize honor roll. Every time a contestant picks 11 or more winners his or her name goes that list to be eligible for premium four-ticket Peach Bowl package to be awarded at a drawing in December.
Her husband, Dan, and children, Willy, Gree and Grace, have all been on the honor roll. Mr. Roberts has won several weekly prizes and one grand prize; Gree is a past weekly winner. The contest, clearly, is a Roberts family activity, and, obviously, they don’t collaborate on their picks.
Besides missing on the Georgia and Falcons upsets, Mrs. Roberts erred by picking Buffalo to beat Detroit. A number of players also missed on New Orleans victory over Philadelphia or the Carolina Panthers win over Baltimore.
There are some good rivalries in the 14 games in the week’s contest. Whoever picks the most winners, subject to the tiebreaker, will collect a $25 prize from Piedmont Academy, sponsor of the week. The list of games, sponsors, entry blank, rules and honor roll are on page 15. The deadline for entries to be delivered to The News office or faxed to 706-468-6576 is 5 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 20.
