American Legion Refurbishes Cannon

In celebration of Veterans Day on November 11, the Jasper County American Legion Post #110, established in 1932, has resituated and refurbished the WWI artillery piece which adorns the point where E. Washington and Eatonton Streets come together in front of the post building.

Paul Bridges poured a new footing and put a fresh layer of gravel around the old cannon. Also after pressure washing it, a fresh coat of paint was applied. Mr. Bridges advised that at one time there was talk of placing a tank in front of the building, but the old cannon got the nod. The only history post members could offer concerning the cannon was that it was vintage WWI, and as surplus it was donated by the military to their American Legion Post.

As of last week the post’s military piece looks as if it is ready to fire off a round, as it points east toward Europe, where it once proudly served.

The American Legion is the nation’s largest wartime, community-based (non-profit) service organization. With 2.7-million members and over 12,000 posts across the nation, the Legion is dedicated to helping America’s veterans and their families.

With thousands of troops deployed overseas, the American Legion has re-launched a free, easy way to thank them for their service on the eve of Veterans Day, using electronic greeting cards.
Creating the card is quick and easy at The American Legion’s web site, www.legion.org .

The site offers e-mail cards representing each military service along with the service song that plays when the card is opened.

Each card provides plenty of space to compose a personal message, and any active duty service man or woman who has a military e-mail can be sent the special cards.

These cards may be sent now through November 12.
